Applying for Scholarship

This may mean not only filling out a form but also compiling supporting documents, such as transcripts, recommendations and an essay. Or you might need to provide evidence of leadership, patriotism, depth of character, desire to serve or financial need. Get to know the requirements of each scholarship as early as possible so you can do any necessary extra work on time.

A few pointers to remember:

alarm_clock_icon Apply early
Apply as early as possible to scholarship programs. If you can, do it in the fall of your senior year, even if the deadlines aren’t until February or March. Very often, scholarship programs will have awarded all their funds for the year on a first-come, first-served basis before their stated deadlines.
file_icon Follow directions
Read instructions carefully and do what they say. Scholarship programs receive hundreds and even thousands of applications. Don’t lose out because of failure to submit a typewritten essay versus a hand-write one if required, or to provide appropriate recommendations. If you have a question about your eligibility for a particular scholarship or how to complete the application, contact the scholarship sponsors.
contract icon Be organized
It’s a good idea to create a separate file for each scholarship and sort them by their due dates. Track application deadlines and requirements. Store in one place the difference supporting documents you may need, such as transcripts, standardized test scores and letters of recommendation.
success icon Check your work
Proofread your applications for spelling or grammar errors, fill in all blanks and make sure your handwriting is legible.
Copy Icon Keep copies of everything
If application materials get lost, having copies on file will make it easier to resend the application quickly.
Redo Icon Reapply
Some programs only offer money for the first year of college, but others must be renewed each subsequent year.

Avoiding Scholarship Scams

The federal Trade Commission (FTC) developed Project $cholar$cam to alert students and families about potential scams and how to recognize them. Here are the FTC’s seven basic warning signs.

  1. This scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.
  2. You can’t get this information anywhere else.
  3. May I have your credit card/bank account number to hold this scholarship?
  4. We’ll do all the work for you.
  5. The scholarship will cost some money.
  6. You’ve been selected by a national foundation to receive a scholarship.
  7. You’re a finalist” in a competition you never entered.
